Book Overview

Danielle Running is AWOL from the university where she has been working on her Master of Fine Arts degree. She is distressed by her thesis advisor's humiliating criticism and by her academic-supervisor boyfriend's intrusion on her work. The atmosphere in the Drama Department and in the home she shares with her boyfriend has become so threatening that she is hiding out as an aide in a senior care home where she hopes neither her advisor nor her boyfriend can find her. The manager of the home drafts her to entertain the residents, and she performs her takes on classic myths she created as part of her dissertation defense. She becomes friends with a resident of the home who hums more than she talks and who has disturbing troubles with her family that at first distract Danielle from her own problems but inevitably become inextricably entwined with her own. When an elderly woman goes missing and Dani's boyfriend threatens to catch up to her, she finds she must either find the lost woman or somehow confront her boyfriend.
