The wizards of Sandryn Isle spend their lives collecting knowledge, but more than anything they desire the Forgotten Anthem. Yet, the pursuit of the Anthem is also a curse for the more they pursue ancient knowledge, the more they are drawn inward, becoming reclusive and withdrawn from the things that keep them human. Yahryn begins the search, then Makaw, and at last Khendal inherits the tower of Sandryn Isle.Khendal is drawn at a young age into the troubles of mere mortal life as a strange knight arrives with a child. Because of the child's magical connections, Khendal accepts the child, giving it over to the care of his ghostly servants. He hopes that as she grows, she will provide answers or open doors. The girl, Senwy, is not content to be merely an object of study and maintains her connection with the knight Hafa. Together, Senwy and Hafa complicate Khendal's wizardly life and draw him deeper into the mortal world even as they themselves struggle to understand the meaning of their existence.All is not well in the kingdom and a threat grows. The nearby kingdom of Lowlyn and Broshen are ill at ease. The king turns a terrified eye towards Coddwyn forest while prince Cael attempts to muster a defense against Broshen's imminent invasion. Meanwhile, Ashbur, a hungry, ambitious mortal who desires the power of a wizard, threatens Khendal and those he has begrudgingly come to care for. Khendal must travel carefully the path of the wizard. Painfully, he begins to learn that knowledge, power and the Forgotten Anthem are not the only things that he values.
