The magic school is in crisis and the Wizard is honour-bound as the leader in the community to resolve the problem. The teenagers are failing, behaving badly, breaking rules, misusing magic and generally wreaking havoc in their classrooms and in the wider community, upsetting parents, teachers, their peers and, of course, the Wizard. Thus he decides to investigate the school by visiting the classrooms. Featuring all the beloved fairytale creatures, Jan has woven a story of adversity versus triumph, using contemporary issues such as community responsibility, adolescent behaviour, experimentation and disengagement at school.
