Although they fear the woman who lives in the little red brick house, a group of children accept her invitation to share the secrets of her garden. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is a must for parents who are trying to instill the value of being non-judgmental in their children. It is written by a Swedish author and the illustrations are beautiful. The eight children, all neighborhood friends, are afraid of the lady who lives in the brick house down the block and often torment her by parading past her place calling out names. It is interesting to see that the author has captured the way of children - how they are all brave and big-talking in a group but would never do such things on their own. One day the door opens and they are invited into her house for pancakes. they feel awkward and giggly, like kids their age would really be in such a situation. Even the facial features on the children show their discomfort. They eat and go down to the end of the garden with the woman and listen to her fascinating stories. They leave her house with new knowledge and respect for her, and even by the illustrations a reader can see that the children have lost their heart for tormenting this woman. it is a great lesson for kids in how wrong pre-judgment of someone can be. This is a lesson that cannot be over-stressed these days. I bought this book in 1980 for my first daughter, and packed it away for "someday". Someday will arrive in May of this year when that daughter has my first grandchild. the old lesson will be taught again - it is never too old to learn.
