1783 London: A bitter winter is done and though the Revolutionary War in America continues, most Londoners are more interested in the fact that taxes are up, the price of tea is down and that balloon flight mania is taking over the city. The dead body found brutalized in Ranelagh Pleasure Gardens interests them too.

Constable Oastler is put in charge of an inquiry that looks as if it is going to reach into the realms of the Gentry. Oastler doesn't know what goes on in Gentlemen's Clubs, Grand Houses or Election Balls but he does know that being a Bow Street Runner is not an advantage when you're dealing with Lords and Ladies.

James Boswell, a well known figure in London's cultural scene, comes to the Runner's aid. Boswell has insider knowledge, some of which he is willing to share.

Oastler investigates as well as he can within the limits of the law and then on its edges. And he has an advantage the Upper Class is not expecting. This Officer from Bow Street is not going to give up.
