The Windfall Instinct: The Psychology Behind Why Sudden Money Disappears So Fast
Have you ever noticed how quickly an unexpected bonus, tax refund, or inheritance seems to disappear? In The Windfall Instinct, author Jordan Ellis explores the fascinating psychology behind why sudden money vanishes so much faster than the money we earn through daily effort.
Drawing on behavioral economics and the concept of the "house money effect," this book explains that our minds unconsciously treat unearned money as less real and easier to part with. Whether it arrives with the grief of an inheritance, the celebration of a gift, or the sheer luck of a found account, windfall money triggers a specific psychological mechanism that lowers our financial defenses.
In this insightful guide-part of The Money Instinct library-you will discover:
The House Money Effect: How casino psychology and behavioral science explain your willingness to risk sudden gains. The Emotion of Money: Why settlements tied to pain, or inheritances tied to grief, are often spent to manufacture emotional closure. The Refund Trap: How your own overpaid taxes trick your brain into feeling like you received a government gift. The Equity Illusion: Why life-changing stock payouts often dissolve into an inflated lifestyle you never consciously chose. The Windfall Instinct goes beyond theory to provide concrete, actionable "overrides" for every type of sudden gain. By learning to recognize the hidden mental accounting of windfalls, you can interrupt the cycle of impulsive spending and start treating every dollar with the same respect, no matter how it arrived in your bank account.
