One of my all time favorites

I read this book as a young girl, and re-read it several times. Now my last reading lies some years back, but still the story is vivid in my head and heart. It is a coming of age story, a story about a daughter starting out by wanting to prove herself (to her father, to herself) but later giving up what she loves most (her own horse) to do what must be done to save "her" herd of wild horses. The wild horses in this book are very real, they act like horses do, there is no romantic falling in love with and taming of a wild stallion. Just one girl all alone on a desperate trip, trying to lead a herd of horses who do not understand the danger they are in. I remember the scene where they have to cross a highway like I was there. The writing is, as far as I remember, not very wordy and colorful, but rather short and to the point. I think this helped me to see the essence of the story and to paint my own inner images.
