On the eve of his eighteenth birthday, Paul wakes to his father Eric cooking bacon. Paul asks about his phone, missing since a party the previous night, but Eric hasn't seen it. They discuss Paul's upcoming birthday, and Paul asks if his friend Cole can join them for dinner. Eric agrees but says they need to have a serious discussion that night before his birthday.

Paul spends the day at the boardwalk, searching for his phone and hoping to see Cole, but has no luck. He feels a growing unease about the missing phone and the looming talk with Eric.

That evening, during dinner, Eric pours wine and begins the conversation. He reveals shocking details about Paul's birth: his mother was someone Eric specifically got pregnant to create Paul, calling him his "one true love." Eric then explains they are "Day-walkers" and that he needs to "turn" Paul completely after midnight on his birthday. As he speaks, Eric transforms, revealing terrifying fangs. Paul is left frozen in horror and disbelief at the monstrous truth about his father and himself.
