It's 1945 and the war has ended in Europe but the hate and devastation linger on. Lt. Vere Marriott of the Royal Navy and men are moored in Kiel harbor, witness to the disintegration of the once mighty German Navy. For them the fighting's over; now they have a chance to make a tidy profit-and to take bitter revenge.
I have read several Douglas Reeman books over the years with great enjoyment. His characters are always true to themselves in the midst of chaos, corruption and the horrors of modern war. This book is a little different - it takes place after World War II ends. The hero is the commander of a vessel sent to take over a German war port. The action in the book takes place with respect to refugee vessels and the tenuous relationhip between the British and the Russian allies. More significantly, it deals with the difficult transition many characters have to make from war time conditions to peace time blahs and from warriors to occupiers. Characteristics which were assetts in war become fatal flaws in peace times. A very good novel - one of his best.
