The Whispering Stones

By Wayne Atkinson

When Sarah and Tom take shelter from a summer storm in a neglected churchyard, they stumble upon something extraordinary. Beneath an ancient yew tree lies a hidden compartment containing a tarnished brass key, a faded hand-drawn map, and a letter written over one hundred years ago with just three desperate words: "Finish what we couldn't."

Signed only E.H., the letter sets Sarah-a puzzle-loving twelve-year-old with a gift for noticing details others miss-and Tom-her practical, quick-witted best friend-on a quest through centuries of secrets. Cryptic stone carvings, forgotten memorials, hidden messages in stained-glass windows, and riddles left by someone who expected this mystery to remain unsolved forever. The clues are everywhere, waiting to be decoded.

But Sarah and Tom aren't the only ones searching the churchyard after dark. Someone else is digging through old graves and asking dangerous questions about the church's forgotten history. Someone who clearly doesn't want the past disturbed.

As the children follow the trail deeper-beneath the church itself, through layers of village history, and into the truth that was deliberately buried-they discover this mystery isn't about hidden treasure at all. It's about an act of courage that was erased from history to protect an innocent family. It's about a hero nobody remembers.

Now two ordinary friends must race against time to uncover what really happened before it disappears forever. Before someone powerful decides it should stay hidden.

Perfect for readers who love atmospheric mysteries, historical adventures, and stories where friendship and determination can unearth long-forgotten truths. A tale of courage, loyalty, and the power of asking the right questions-even when adults say some secrets should stay buried.
