The sound of the electronic devices, though infinitesimal, echoed in his ears like a low-frequency hum. For the past few years, he had been forced to sleep by blocking his ears as much as possible. The environment in his room was filled with screens that controlled almost everything, to varying degrees. The iron door, with its lining, was designed to shield against dangerous radiation. The furnishings were not new; it was evident that his equipment was supplemented by items that had, over time, been found discarded in the streets.
The ecological disaster was not just enormous, it was total. Humanity had managed, through its actions, to wipe out both fauna and flora, and to survive, it sought refuge in a few monstrous cities that merely allowed their inhabitants to live under a protective magnetic dome. Communication was nonexistent. The population was sparse. Births, none.
The fate of humanity rested in the hands of a few who fought tooth and nail to preserve it, and in the hands of a handful of outcasts attempting to revive the lost culture and forgotten civilization.
The solution, however, though with little chance of success, lay hidden in "SANCTUARY," a secret project run by two beings without any identifiable origin.
