The Wereghost Menace

By Rod Spurgeon

Mintax is not dressing up as a pirate. That is the least of his problems.

It is Halloween aboard the Starcruiser Galaxy, and the job is simple: deliver a sealed case of Zentu chips to a client who pays well and asks few questions. Then something steps out of the cargo bay wall, and Mintax reaches for his weapon.

Goober does something else. He asks its name.

It has one. Donaldo Ensala went to work one day and never came home. The police suspected foul play and never found a body. What he had actually done was sign up for a paid medical trial, a thousand credits toward an engagement ring he could not otherwise afford, and a promise that it would help cure the forsal virus.

Something went wrong. The thing in the cargo bay is what is left of him, and it is not the only one.

The crew took this job for the money. Finishing it means delivering the cargo to the people who created him, and leaving a man who only wanted to get married to haunt a ship that is not even his.

Fast, funny space opera with real stakes, and a monster who turns out to be the victim.

A standalone Starcruiser Galaxy adventure. A short read of about 13,000 words.
