The Weimar Republic in 250 pages, more or less

Unlike the three reviewers before me, I look at this book from two perspectives. This is the first book published by de Jonge and seems to have been written more to meet an academic qualification than as an scholarly treatise (like his later works on Stalin and Rasputin). The second is that de Jonge states that this is not going to be an in-depth study of the era but more of a discussion and establishment of criteria that led to the success of the NSDAP under Hitler. By definition a chronicle "is [an] historical account of facts and events in chronological order. Typically equal weight is given for important events and less important events, the purpose being the recording of events that occurred. This is in contrast to a narrative or history, which focuses on important events and excludes those the author does not see as important." So de Jonge did what he said he would do, and he does it with clarity and humor. For anyone who has the foggiest idea as to what went on in inter-war Germany. This book gives a great overview.
