This is horror with intellegence and sex appeal. What an absolutely fun and white-knuckled read. Her characters come right off the page. Ms. McKenna has a unique voice, and I have the feeling we will be hearing more from her. Two thumbs up
A rip roaring murderously good time

Leeann Worthier and George Willits are both big fish in a small pond. She is the local beauty queen, and self proclaimed prettiest girl in town. He is the heir apparent to the family petroleum business, and judging by the family's wealth, business is booming. It is no shock then, then in the small town of Dalton, these two end up together. Well, it may have been a shock to his mamma. She probably saw it as a tragedy, but then again, the Willits family has a lot of tragedies. George's uncle and cousins were murdered in their home by George's aunt, and other strange things have happened in that house. So, when George announces that the same house is is wedding gift to Leeann, so that they can have their own home, she is less than thrilled. Strange and terrible things continue to happen, and Leeann is bound to get to the bottom of things, even if it kills her. Oh my goodness. I wish I would have had a paper bag when I read this, because I was laughing so hard at times I was hyperventilating! Kathleen McKenna sure does know how to write a memorable story! This is a story involving small town life, with it's scandal and charm, in a Southwestern town that fancies itself more Southern than it really is. The characters are brilliantly farcical, as are the situations in which they find themselves. I guffawed several times over Leeann's dialogue, both internal and external, because that girl has quite a way with the words. In some ways, the Leeann's situation is tragic, and in some ways it's trashy. I love both aspects. I do not want to give anything away, because trust me, you want to read this book. It is sort of like Murder She Wrote meets King of the Hill, all set in Oklahoma. There are supernatural aspects to the book, which will appeal to paranormal fans, and a touch of mystery, but it is also quite comedic. There is never a dull moment in this one. Read it, and see for yourself!
It sparkles like diamonds.

"I am always eager to read a new author, sometimes the journey is worth the effort. Other times its a long hard haul. This time it was an amazing journey into the pages of a novel by a writer with a unique style and distinct voice. You cannot read 'The Wedding Gift" without becoming involved with the characters. The author has cleverly brought them to life on the page. They are real enough to touch and endearing enough to make you smile. Leeann is a delight, you want to strangle her and hug her not necessarily in that order, the humour stays close to the surface yet something sinister weaves it's deadly way to the top, urging the reader on, and luring them to a shattering and unexpected conclusion. the author has my heartiest congratulations...this one is a winner." I bought this on create space because I thought it was a romance, ha ha, there is romance in it, but its packed in alongside some hilarious lines and a lot of hair raising horror. I loved Leeann, she is one of the sweetest/stupidest/coolest heroines to ever appear between book pages. I wasnt able to put it down from the first page, which was another really different thing because the first page is a newspaper article, then it goes on to Leeann alternatley ripping the people she cant stand and telling hilarious stories about everyone in general, but there is a dark side and it sneaks up on you and then you need to keep the lights on. Is a great read.
The perfect wave

I read a lot of books a year - somewhere between 50 and 100 at a guess - and many of those books are miraculous in their own way, making me feel pleased and fulfilled to have spent time with them. Then, every now and again, you get a book which helps you understand what it must be like to be an expert surfer encountering the perfect wave that just picks you up and gives you the ride of your life. 'The Wedding Gift' is just such a book. Scary in places, intriguing, sharp tongued and line-by-line continuously and effortlessly funny right through to the very end. There is no point in analysing why this book is so good, unless you happen to be the author intent on repeating the formula. Just let yourself be carried away by the pleasure of it all. I did, and, shoot, I am up for the next one too. Hell, yeah.
