At times sacred, at times profane, funny and serious and seriously funny, The Way 2 is full of insights and surprises. It may not be the first book of love poetry, but I have never seen anything quite like it. The book celebrates romantic love and its layers of desire, adventure, curiosity, worry and tranquility. Occasionally graphic, occasionally abstract, the book is full of the life that surrounds love, whether it be apple pressing, river exploration or eating borscht or clams oraganata at an old-time restaurant in Belleville, New Jersey. I love how a single snow flake falls into the lover's mouths as they kiss, instantly melting. Love's mysteries are not so much solved as deepened in these poems. Though there is longing for the other in The Way 2, the subject is more the other herself, and how she moves through life both with and without her partner. Memorize these poems!
