In The Watchman, Cambro uses his unique writing style to blend elements of love, hate, grand ambitions, science, religion, history, and fantasy-but all with an overriding touch of the supernatural. Part 1 opens in 1948 with Gerald Mitchell, a good family man, contemplating murder even as a mysterious watchman strives to deter him. Gerald's actions that night propel him and his family, unwittingly, into a titanic battle between good and evil forces, embodied by two haunting spirits. Part 2 focuses on Gerald's daughter, Susan, and her husband, Jason. This shifts in Part 3 to the grandson, Charles Williamson, as the new millennium begins. Romantic tragedy unfolds among the dramas of worldly affairs in business and the environment, while simultaneously, fortunes and lives are made and lost. These swings of triumph, defeat, and redemption are brought to the fore.
