This is a story of a young man who immigrates to Texas from Tennessee in the late 1850s to start a new life for himself and the slaves he brings with him, following a pattern established by his grandfather who emigrated from Virginia to Tennessee some sixty years earlier. He arrives in the newly established state of Texas when it is still sparsely settled, just before the start of the Civil War. There he finds a wife and raises a large family. The Watch: a time remembered details the struggles of a farmer-settler carving out a life in early Texas, how he is impacted by the Civil War, the abolition of slavery, and the trying times of Reconstruction, and the legacy he leaves for those who follow him.
