The moment came when I was sitting in front of my computer on a chilly October morning. The leaves were gathering in increasingly larger piles on the ground, and everywhere you looked it was painfully obvious that winter was about to be pounding on the door. I pulled up my calendar for the months ahead and imagined it packed with more than just the routine complaining about the cold. For years, I'd been saying that what I really wanted to do was travel the world with a pack on my back and a camera in my hands. Since the day I was given my first camera, I had said again and again that one day I'd be a National Geographic photographer, exploring the hidden wonders of the world, coming back with emotionally evocative and inspiring imagery. So what was stopping me? Was it the fact that no one had approached me and offered me the golden ticket, a position on an awesome and life changing project? Maybe it was just scary to begin a project of that magnitude of my own and see it through to the end. That morning, I decided that I was done waiting, done thinking about the when, or the what if. It was time to put plans into motion. With the help of friends, family, and more than a few strangers, my first Kickstarter campaign, 'The Warm Heart of Africa' exceeded its goal just before Christmas and suddenly anything seemed possible. This book is the end result of that project. It is for all those who helped me along the way, who supported and encouraged me to pursue what I wanted most. This book is the first of many, and I couldn't have done it without that support.
