Recently hired to teach in China, Gilbert was delighted by the school's rural setting and its charming people, especially the 4th-grade teacher Victoria. Was she interested in him, he wondered? She asked him to please critique a story she wrote, and she couldn't stop smiling at him. The story, however, gave a terrifying account of the Cultural Revolution and of Mr. Huang's slaughter of 4 party officials. Mr. Huang happened to be Victoria's father, the school's owner, and a high-ranking figure in the Chinese underworld. All that spelled trouble for Gilbert who was becoming very involved with Victoria. On a weekend visit to Shanghai he witnessed Huang and his gang beating up a night club owner. After that incident, Huang's henchmen enlisted Gilbert in a drug deal and a debt collection. Later, Huang gave Gilbert a promotion and a pay raise. To Gilbert, these occurrences - love, crime, success - seemed tactics Huang used to control him. Gilbert had to change that. He must face Huang before his life would be completely crushed by this ruthless monster whose daughter he desired.
