Nothing exciting ever happens in Sikeston, a small town in southern Missouri where everyone knows one another and nothing goes unnoticed. So, when fifteen-year-old Jessie is unceremoniously left there for the summer with her elderly uncle, she expects her visit to be dull, as usual. Intent on earning a spot in the prestigious journalism program at her high school, Jessie begins her summer assignment of searching for "the story," a hard-hitting piece of news worthy of investigation.

Such an opportunity seems to fall into Jessie's lap as she realizes her sordid neighbor, Ruby Lee Gatlin, has become involved in some shady business. Eager to prove herself, Jessie launches into a full-scale investigation only to discover that evil comes in many forms and horrors from the past are about to coalesce in Sikeston. As a gang of skinheads descends on the small town, Jessie is forced to face her fears and steel herself in ways she didn't know she would ever have to.

With loved ones in danger and Sikeston on the verge of being taken over, the fifteen-year-old leads an investigation into the den of one of history's most notorious white-power cults in search of answers both good and evil.
