Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) doesn't automatically make you a terrible person; but if you are already a selfish abuser with BPD and are unwilling to seek treatment, the effect you have on the people closest to you can be truly terrible. The author married just such a person. They lived in the Bible Belt where he was shamed for revealing any family issues and where she was tolerated or ignored because only the husband was responsible for the success of a marriage, and divorce was the unforgivable sin. They reared three children there, in an environment of growing paranoia and isolation as she grew more and more controlling and abusive toward him and their children. The Wake We Leave is the chronicle of the abuse, the psychological scarring, and the eventual escape and healing of the author with his three sons, presented through the poems and essays that were his key to articulating and understanding for himself what he felt and had experienced.
