The Vision of Wittgenstein

To Ludwig Wittgenstein, language was at best an imperfect construction, unable to properly relate the inner workings of the human experience. A giant among analytic philosophers, Wittgenstein spent most of his life striving to define the complex interaction of meaning and understanding. His essential theories reveal such central concepts as Ordinary Language, picture theory, private language, identity and abstraction and metaphoric connection.

Glorious introduction to Ludwig Wittgenstein and a collectible for fanatics

The Vision of Wittgenstein quotes the Tractatus on the cover, "There are, indeed, things that cannot be put into words." One is the respect I have for this brief, yet oh-so-amazingly deep, expression of Wittgenstein's philosophy. What H.L. Finch has written is after-the-fact of his larger works; what is in The Vision of Wittgenstein has been cultivated over several decades. That is a big plus and is the reason why newcomers and followers alike should consider purchasing a copy. Consider the books 3 parts: 1, What is Meaning? 2, New Image of Human Being; 3, Old and New Thoughts. We go from the historical roots of philosophy to W's 'seeing the world aright' in 70 pages! The author stunningly moves across the whole of Wittgenstein, drawing upon the similarities between earlier and later writings, while pressing this against a historical backdrop. But the fun doesn't stop there: the author makes a unique contribution himself in the form of a 'human compass'- a 2-poled representation of human nature. With compass in hand, the author deftly moves into relocating the 'self', and so on... Unlike the modern 'arguments' over whether W's works are therapeutic or antitheses of each other or etc., Finch manages a sleeker, cheaper, and yes, better book by SHOWING much of what Wittgenstein meant- not babbling on about transcendentals. Fan boys (and girls), treat this book as Secondary Literature.
