The Virgin of Jakarta views the political turmoil in Indonesia during the second half of 1965 between the communist party which got the total support of President Sukarno and logistic support from communist China. The country witnessed a duration of terror full of assassination, kidnapping, imprisonments, and property destruction. The party was able to control the important positions in the government and the military as well as the media. The communist revolt was about to succeed until President Suharto in cooperation with the Army generals were able to contain the chaos created by the communist party.
The novel followed the leader of the communist party and his circle as well as a family that struggled against the spread of communism and protection of the country from foreign domination. One of the leaders of the patriots was kidnapped. His daughter bravely challenged the leader and his followers. When the rebellions were crushed, she was instrumental in the arrest of the leader when he went underground to organize an attempt to gain power.
