Joseph Gruber returns to his birthplace, Vienna, Austria, to spend a year with his uncle's family. While he is there Nazi Germany annexes Austria, and life in the City of Dreams changes in profound ways. Joseph becomes concerned for his Jewish friends who now face severe persecution and seeks to help them emigrate. However, the situation worsens dramatically in ways he could not have anticipated, and he finds that his own future is in jeopardy as well as theirs. In desperation, he realizes that a painful sacrifice will be necessary to escape disaster.
