On the southern and western faces of the Paria Plateau stand the Vermilion Cliffs, sentinels greeting all who intend to go into the wilderness. Those cliffs are perhaps the most contradictory element of all. They stand silent but seem to invite the unwary, even draw them in. But they also warn the wary. To those not careless, the silent cliffs signal that the wilderness beyond is a harsh and dangerous place. The contradiction, of course, is not in the cliffs-it is in those who think to go to them, who think to challenge the wilderness that they guard. The unwary think they are being welcomed. The wary know that this is no place for the careless.The Vermilion Cliffs is an account of three characters. Two of them come into the Paria wilderness unprepared for what it will do to them. This novel tells the stories of what happens to them in that place. The third character is the wilderness itself, and it has its own story to tell. That story tells of others drawn to its isolation and desert beauty.
