The Velvet Touch is a tough book; it calls for unprecedented action by all the people on Earth to start along a new path. The book details the terrible and unsustainable damages happening to all facets of the environment caused by too many humans doing just the things that humans like to do. Even disregarding, for the moment, the species-threatening climate changes we have caused, human agriculture alone has drastically changed the various ecosystems in over 40% of the habitable land. Human livestock amounts to 60% of all mammalian biomass of the world. In a word, what we humans are doing, by sheer weight of our numbers and footprint, is creating an unsustainable mess in our world. ?What is needed soon, is a recognition that our numbers and thus our heavy footprint, needs to be reduced to a safe level that falls easily within the carrying capacity of the Earth. ?Abundant data shows that what we are very busily doing is, besides causing rapid extinctions, using up the Earth's resources much faster than they can be replaced or restored. Obviously such a situation can not long be sustained. The easiest way out of this is to reduce the demand for limited resources by reducing the "demandees". For the Earth (and us) to continue into the twenty third century and more, we will have to have fewer people to make demands. That is the message that needs to be sent, received and acted upon.
