"The Veil" is a historical novel about four generations of women, grandmothers, mothers and daughters, who use the veil to cope with the pressures of womanhood. Each woman is forced to cope with their own choices as they struggle to live as a woman in America. In 1887, Hannah emigrates to America with the dream of practicing her Lutheran faith freely. Hannah tells her story and what lies beneath the veil as historical events shape her life. Her youngest daughter, Mina, tells her story as she struggles with the lack of choices for women of her generation. Margaret is Mina's oldest daughter, and like women of her generation, she veils her innermost pain with denial. The fourth generation of women is Ann, Margaret's middle daughter. Ann learns the importance of the veil as a young girl growing up in the 60s. These are the personal stories told by four American women, Hannah, Mina, Margaret and Ann. To survive, they each use the veil to protect their pain and disappointment from anti-immigrant sentiment, lack of women's rights, predetermined roles for women, sexual assault and racism. The veil is passed down from generation to generation and each woman must meet the demands and expectations of their generation.
