This is not a substantive review: for that, look to reviews of other editions, and know that I was and remain generally interested in the content for all the reasons that are well documented elsewhere. And my personal view is that this volume is both historically relevant and still valuable to contemporary readers. I purchased this edition despite no reviews of it, based largely on its physical size and the fact that it was available in a hard-cover. As expected, the font is easy on the eye, and the paper is good quality. What I did not expect was the strange formatting. Mysteriously, every page of the book has a header in bold font that reads "The Letters of the Younger Pliny;" while I presume that the erudite Mr. James was familiar with Pliny the Younger (who also appears to have written about religion), if there is any other relationship between the two I have not yet figured it out. Also, all of the footnotes in the book are printed immediately below the paragraphs that reference them, and in the same font as the rest of the book. This is convenient enough, but odd. Finally, there is no introduction or preface or any material providing any context on the text. That's OK, since you can find it elsewhere. Subsequent searching on-line indicates that the book is available as a PDF file for free, so it appears that the publisher has just taken text that is freely available in the public domain, bound it, put a strange header on every page, and claimed a copyright on this edition. I don't particularly regret the purchase, but am posting this review so that other prospective buyers know what you are getting with this volume.
