The story is an original by writer Leigh Brackett. It does bear some loose resemblance to a story by John William Polidori, “The Vampyre”; however, more than the names have been changed. Only the character remains.
Webb Fallon (John Abbott) returns to his old home on the coast of Africa. He sets up shop as an innkeeper (the inn looks sort of like Rick’s place in Casablanca). There, he befriends a young couple and earns the town's respect.
The local priest, Father Gilchrist (Grant Withers), suspects that Fallon is a sinister name. He never says anything about a tangled Webb.
Strange things are happening to the blood supply of the town folk and the natives alike. The natives accuse Fallon of being a Vampyre, but Thomas, who knows Fallon for what he is, says nothing.
Julie (Peggy Stewart) finds Fallon fascinating as he reveals himself to her. What would her father say?
Anyway, this is an intriguing movie and a different take on vampires. I liked the dancing girl scene with Adele Mara as Lisa.
