Little Agnes Finds a Purpose in Helping Others

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Ann Donegan Johnson examines humility in the life of Mother Teresa (1910-1997). The book tells the story of a very loving little girl named Agnes. When her father died, Agnes was determined to remember him by following his example of generosity to others. As an adult, Agnes became a Catholic nun and changed her name to Mother Teresa. She began a lifetime of missionary service helping poor people around the world. She has received awards for her service--and many have followed her example of giving their time to help others. Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Mother Teresa's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults. Closing quote: "Mother Teresa's work continues. By helping one poor person at a time, she has helped millions--and that is no small achievement for someone who has described herself as `a little pencil in God's hand.'" (p. 62)
