Albert Dedicates His Life to Healing Others

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Spencer Johnson helps us appreciate the dedication of Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965). The book introduces us to a young man named Albert, who looked at his life and decided that he had been given many advantages others did not have. He decided he would do his best to share his gifts with others. Albert studied hard in medical school and became a doctor. Then he moved to Africa and spent his life making sure the people there had better medical care. Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Schweitzer's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults. Closing quote: "Not everyone can become a doctor and go to Africa like Albert Schweitzer, but there will always be work dedicated people can do. That is one thing Albert taught the world. It's something you might want to think about." (p. 62)
