1928: Far from in love with the idea of moving from North Dakota to Minnesota, sixteen year-old Doris Zelm is feeling distressed and sad about the direction her life seems to be heading. Self-conscious about being deaf in one ear due to a bout with the Spanish flu when she was seven, school has been uniquely challenging, and her life seems to be heading uphill. After a short while, she is happy to meet a trustworthy new friend at school named George Moedal, and also Lloyd and Mina Goodman, a set of twin siblings who live nearby. As they adjust, Doris is unsettled by the nature of her new house. Why was she told that the cleaning crew never bothered to open a door leading to a hidden attic? Who were the mysterious cleaners in charge of emptying the house? Were they hiding something? Are they still around? She wants answers. Furthermore, the kids, eager for adventure, build a clubhouse in the woods thinking it will be the perfect place to play games, tell stories, and build memories. That all changes when a mysterious man dressed in a soldier's uniform shows up during a storm, and asks for help. In their quest to help and protect this soldier, friendships are tested, relationships are soured, and danger is imminent. In a story of mystery, adventure, friendship, and a twist of love, Doris must learn the truth about her house, and the soldier, even if it means putting herself at risk.
