The Use and Significance of Student Union Violence

The sociopolitical history of multiparty C te d'Ivoire since 1990 has been marked by the recurring use of violence by student unions as their primary means of expression. As a result, they have emerged as the main perpetrators of political violence both on and off university campuses. This study, which seeks to explore the significance of this mode of expression, focuses on the political stakes of violence and the rationale underlying the actions of union activists in relation to their precarious socioeconomic conditions. Thus, by identifying their perceptions of violence and unionism, the study demonstrates the unions' ability to adapt to political changes and transform them into opportunities for financial gain, political positioning, and professional integration. Keywords: violence, union, deviance, uses and meanings.
