The Upward Calling - Commentary on the Book of Philippians

This volume is a verse-by-verse study of the Book of Philippians, one of the shortest of the letters to the churches. It is not as foundational in its doctrine as Romans, not as comprehensive in addressing problems as the Corinthian letters, not as strong in its condemnation of Zionistic intrusion into the Church and articulation of the Covenant of Promise as Galatians, and not as lofty and glorious in its tone as Ephesians. It does not take on the conflict between the wisdom of this world in contrast to the wisdom of God and give it as profound a discourse as Colossians. Philippians deals with very pragmatic issues: bickering in the church, competing with one another for preeminence, the desire for recognition and vainglory, and the failure to diligently live up to responsibilities. Even so, some of the most memorable verses and inspiring teaching in all the Scriptures are found in Philippians. It is there that the apostle declares the superiority over departing and being with the Lord to remaining in this mortal world. And it is in Philippians that the apostle articulates the importance of dying completely to this world in order to know Christ, to have the power of His resurrection at work in our lives, and to obtain the high calling which God has assigned us to achieve in Jesus Christ. It is in Philippians that some of the most comforting and reassuring words are said about our trials in this life, God's watchfulness and care for us, and the way we can have peace in our hearts in the midst of the storms even though that peace defies all reasonable considerations that would tell us we should worry and be in a dilemma. In its brief, terse, and none dramatic way Philippians is vital to an understanding and achievement of knowing Christ personally and a sanctified walk in the Kingdom of God.
