Book Overview

"I was sitting at my desk reading, with a cup of tea, my windows flung open, when I heard The Tenant enter his garret, just on the other side of the wall from myself."

THE YEAR IS 1883 and Emma M. Lion has returned to her London neighborhood of St. Crispian's. But Emma's plans for a charmed and studious life are sabotaged by her eccentric Cousin Archibald, her formidable Aunt Eugenia, and the slightly odd denizens of St. Crispian's.

Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be, which comprise a series of volumes. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.

Readers have compared Beth Brower's writing to Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, P.G. Wodehouse, and L. M. Montgomery.

THE UNSELECTED JOURNALS OF EMMA M. LION, Volume 2 by Beth Bower This second installment picks up right where the first one left off. I appreciate the cast of characters list in the beginning; it was very helpful as there are quite a few to keep track of. Emma continues to deliver the news and goings on in her life and in the charming town of St. Crispians. In this book, we get to know some of the side characters more; Roland, the Duke of Islington, Hawkes, and “The Tenant”. They’re mysterious and intriguing characters that add so much to the story. I especially love the secret note passing with “The Tenant”, the many literary references, and the addition of a feline friend for Emma. I do feel the story would benefit from a little more world building. Like, what’s the lore with “The Roman” and objects disappearing? Perhaps that will addressed with the next installment. That said, I’m jumping right into Volume 3! Highly recommend if you’re in need of a little whimsy and humor. Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

The cover of the book looked like the book I ordered, brand new condition, but the inside was a book of Abenaki poetry!
