THE UNSEEN by Katherine Webb A slow burn murder-mystery, but one that is chock full of well-researched historical references that were quite interesting. In 2011, Leah is investigating the origins of some letters found on an unidentified and mummified WWII soldier. The info she gathers leads to a small Berkshire village in England. In 1911, fresh out of prison after her involvement in a Suffragette demonstration, Catherine “Cat” Morley, has secured a position as a servant to Reverend Albert Canning and his wife Hester. Cat is ambitious, feisty, and refuses to settle for a life as a servant. Hester is young and naive. She doesn’t understand why Albert refuses to consummate their marriage. (👀 Girl…) Meanwhile, Albert is completely obsessed with the idea of “elementals” (fairies) thanks to his “new friend” theosophist, Robin Durant. Y’all the drama in this was all over the place. I enjoyed it because I do love a messy storyline, but it unfolds so slowly! The present day narrative felt unnecessary; the past was much more compelling. I listened to the audiobook in tandem with reading the book; I feel this helped with the slow pacing. Overall, a good one to pick up if you’re looking for an immersive experience. Rating: 3.75/5 ⭐️
