In The Arizona territory, a decade after the Civil War. In the town of Dobson, a graveyard is in turmoil as a body grows, pushing up the earth and knocking down buildings.
The body is from the fresh grave of Leroy Roosevelt, a young black man hanged out of fear and hatred.
"Our destinies are intertwined, the three of us," Otis tells Cleve. "We make up a trinity, but Leroy alone will judge the future."
Cleve Biddle raised Leroy like a son and thinks a future of lynchings and black laws is a bleak one. Otis, a clairvoyant, believes mankind will come to their better natures. These two men with memories of enslavement must face the impossible in the desert with the nation's future uncertain.
