A Wise, Witty, Poetic and Delightful Book

This is a delightful, insightful, wise, and wonderful book. It is told from the point of view of a unicorn, but not just any unicorn, and certainly not a stereotypical medieval fantasy unicorn. This unicorn wears socks with frogs on them, visits a psychiatrist, carries a cell phone, and generally experiences life in the 21st century. Along the way, the unicorn, by looking at the world through non-human eyes, illuminates truths and exposes absurdities in the way we all live, think, and believe. Step by step, through more than a hundred short pieces, the author builds a vision of a world better, more peaceful, more accepting and caring, more courageous, and more sensible than our own. Sometimes the truths revealed are straightforward and practical, sometimes they are complex and profound. I found myself reading some of the entries over and over to catch each nuance and lyrical turn of phrase. Sigriddaughter's writing is witty, poetic, flowing, and thoroughly enjoyable. By the end of the book, you feel you know the unicorn and are enriched by that. She is able to create characters and situations with few words so that, while the entries may be short, each one tells a story and has a message. This is a book to keep close at hand, to read sections of over and over, and to find new meaning in with each reading.

A Small Book with BIG messages

~"The Unicorn And" will erupt in the reader's hands like something beautiful, potent, and heartbreaking. I viewed the Unicorn as the seeker, the hunter, the one whom reflects and asks, WHY? The Unicorn was ME. The Unicorn is YOU. It is a book of lessons, philosophy, purpose, history, insight, and reflection. If the reader is looking for answers and one to solve his or her trials and tribulations, this is not the book for you. But if the reader is searching for vibrant messages and a purposeful, thought provoking journey, this book will satisfy your hunger. Beate Sigriddaughter's writing is smooth, lush, and delectable. Her words need to absorb into the body and soul ...then discussed in depth. I loved this excerpt on the last page, which reads like a gorgeous poem... "Unlike a melancholy girl imagining her funeral with candles and flowers and everyone in tears, regretting that they hadn't been nicer to her, the white unicorn imagined its death like this: That is would be carried off by many busy creatures into all directions at once, on two legs, on four legs, on six legs, on eight legs, on bellies, on wings, in fangs, in mandibles, in claws, in hands. And many years form then, its grateful bones would serve to nourish something still... In a time of troubled waters...this book reminds us of hope...
