The second earl of Southampton was only five years old when his father died and he had a long minority under the control of his mother. He was brought up and remained a strict Roman Catholic and this got him into trouble with the authorities in Elizabethan times. His marriage was a disaster. He held no significant offices and occupied his time with building projects. Yet his short life (he died at 36) is not without interest.
