The Unfriendly Travellers

FOREWORD (c)Audu Ufedo Joseph
Audu Ufedo, Joseph, a young creative writer has demonstrated once again, his love and commitment to the society through writing. "We do not associate wisdom with beginners, but here is a new writer endowed with the gift of ancient story tellers". The above is the reaction of Achebe to Adichie's second novel Half of a Yellow Sun. Audu Joseph is also another young writer endowed with such wisdom as seen in his latest collection of poetry titled "Unfriendly Travellers".
As I noticed in his works, he is creative in presenting the upheavals in the contemporary society. The injustice in the political atmosphere is presented by the fearless creative young man who has exposed the odour which we can perceive from the dirty political atmosphere. He also demonstrates his love for nature by presenting the climatic conditions and gender inequality. Also, he does not fail to present the issue of love and betrayal which is topical in our society today.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...This declarations from the Holy Bible underscores the profundity of the spoken word as an ultimate vehicle of utterance, a custodian of experience and a channel of expression in language. The power of the spoken word is demonstrated in this collection using the poetic devices to present Religious bigotry, Hypocrisy and Man's inhumanity to man.
The title is symbolic and metaphorical, but the message is clear. It presents the uncertainty surrounding the vibration in the contemporary society which is caused by man's inhumanity to man. 'Travelers and Drum' as used in this poem gives the mental picture of the victims of kidnapping in their horrendous captivities. It reveals the menace of insurgency and the insecurity of our society where the common man has become a prey in the hands of terrorists.
The Second Coming is a sub-title in the collection where the author with the use of imagery presents the clash of culture, racial segregation, inequality which has beclouded our society in this recent time. Some of his poems have been publish in both local and international journals. The Horrendous Nightmare, The Abominable Rain (plays). The unknown Gunmen is also a short story. The author is unique in the way he brings this intriguing features to a collusion and presents the fate of the generation yet unborn in our ability to change the narrative at any level. The idea in this collection perfectly addresses the social, political and economic issues in our present day society, I therefore implore all and sundry to enjoy this message.
