Ainee is only nineteen, working as a typesetter for the New York Herald. The year is 1897 and the notorious Blackwell Island asylum for women has only recently been constructed. Rumors abound of horrors that take place deep inside the dark monolith's interiors. When an escaped patient is found dead wearing a bracelet belonging to a missing heiress from a powerful family, Ainee is asked to feign insanity and go undercover as a patient to find her. With the help of Chloe, a street urchin she befriends, Ainee finds the courage to get admitted to the asylum. The head editor of the newspaper where she works will know of the ruse, promising to get her released after three days. But once inside, her own life is in danger as she soon becomes entangled in a supernatural mystery, uncovering an unspeakable corruption. If she fails to discover her courage and summon all her wits, she just might become forever trapped inside as one of Blackwell's many unfortunates. Ainee used her left hand in an attempt to pry off the corpse's fingers that gripped her right wrist. Then something unexpected happened the dead woman's hand clutched Ainee's and closed Ainee's fingers tight around the bracelet, as if the dead woman wanted Ainee to understand the importance of the bracelet. As Ainee broke free, she fell backward and onto the snow, gasping for air. In her right hand, she clutched the dead woman's bracelet. The policeman and Chloe were now aware of something happening and turned their attention along with some of the onlookers towards Ainee. They heard the water splashing as the corpse slid back into the water. Ainee crashed into the snow with uneven gasps. "Jesus, Mary, saints preserve us," said the policeman as he, Chloe, and Ainee watched the dead woman once again submerge beneath the surface. The last thing they saw was her face, with ghostly eyes, eyes that then closed once again beneath the blur of rippling water. ?--From The Unfortunate, Chapter Six
