Journey to the Past

Peter and Susan were very excited as they ran to Doctor Jabberwocky's house. He had promised them a new surprise today and they couldn't wait to see what he had invented. It was a time machine pen. At first, Peter was a little disappointed. He was looking for something a little more exciting. That was before he grabbed the pen and sent himself, his sister Susan and their dog Gibbon back into the past. They travel back in time to 1850 when slavery was still practiced. They meet some slaves and slave owners. At first they have trouble fitting in. They try to order soda at a store and everyone looks at them like they are weird. Soon, they find themselves at a slave auction. They try to help some abolitionist's free some slaves. This turns out to be very dangerous. Peter and Susan learn a lot about what life was like in 1850 and they actually get to experience a part of history. They face danger when Mr. Arbuckle, a slave owner, chases and shoots at them when they are trying to help some of his slaves escape. They face a lot of excitement trying to help three slaves named Caswell, Delila and Toby. This story was very exciting and easy to read. I learned a lot about slavery and what life must have been like back in 1850. I would recommend this book. It was very, very exciting and you will learn why slavery got started and why it was too hard to stop. Be sure to read the book to see if they get back from the past and see what happens to the slaves they try to help.
