Excellent collection detailing the harrowing escapes of the approximately 600 enslaved individuals whom free born African American William Still (1821 - 1902) aided through various means. Still was a successful businessman who used his numerous connections to conduct at least 649 people across dangerous terrain to safety in Canada. In the abridged version are included his detailed notes of their stories as well as letters from them after establishing themselves, newspaper articles and other interesting memoranda of this terrible time and the hopeful daring acts by all sorts of people to help others in dire need. I need to buy the unabridged version, however, to read the entirety of his account. White Abolitionists Levi Coffin and Elizabeth Buffum Chace wrote books as well about their experiences as Conductors on the Underground Railroad. W.E.B. Dubois writes of this time, as does Frederick Douglas, Ida B. Wells writes of the perils of post-Reconstruction. Truly, there are many books on the subject. This is considered the most important, I believe.
