This book is full of information for anyone who is new to walking. Buy it before you start buying any equipment.

Nice little book but with some info intended for UK readers ...

...however, most of the basic info applies to any hiker (good primer on using GPS, maps and compass). Marvelous photos throughout; just wish the authors had told us what we're looking at. For a more detailed book about equipment and How-tos, get Karen Berger's "Backpacking and Hiking."
