The Two Lives of William Niemand
At fifty, William Niemand has perfected the art of becoming nobody.
He teaches English at a struggling Los Angeles school, conceals his loneliness behind wit, and avoids every question his wife, Suong, needs him to answer. He has carried the guilt of his teenage girlfriend's death for thirty-two years-and arranged his diminished life so that nothing can wound him quite so deeply again.
Then William signs a false attendance report for an employer operating a student-visa mill.
On the same weekend, a stray cat named Justice enters his apartment. Father Sergio and an old friend tell William that every person secretly makes three wishes: one for the soul, one for the heart, and one for the wallet.
William laughs at the story.
But later, looking at Justice, he thinks: I want my life back.
At 2:12 p.m., his life divides.
In one life, William hides behind silence and lets Suong leave. In the other, he tells her the truth and asks her to stay. Yet honesty does not guarantee happiness, and failure does not end the possibility of grace. As both lives unfold, William must face an immigration investigation, the loss of his profession, an unfinished love from the past, and the moral consequences of every choice he once considered too small to matter.
At the center of both lives stands a hidden Los Angeles garden-a soup kitchen, sanctuary, and unlikely paradise for people searching for food, work, forgiveness, or hope.
Tender, witty, and quietly suspenseful, The Two Lives of William Niemand asks a haunting question: If we could see the lives created by our smallest decisions, would we finally understand who we are?
William Niemand means William Nobody.
But Nobody does not have to remain nobody.
