If your parents knew everything about you before you were born, would you be here? That is the question posed in this entertaining drama. All is well when Suzanne Gold and her close New York family discover that she is pregnant, until a prenatal test reveals that the baby will most likely be homosexual. The news forces the entire Gold family to confront issues of bigotry, evolution and the limits of love.

Tolin's play is one that explores the human psyche deeply. It is a moving and telling script. The son is a gay set designer for the Met in New York. He's heavy into Wagner (and the play calls for lot's of Wagner background music). He loves his parents, but they really haven't accepted his orientation. He loves his sister dearly. She is married to a geneticist and is a committed pro-choice, pro-gay liberal. She gets pregnant and her husband and she have a genetics test to tell them about the baby. It's almost certainly going to be left-handed, intelligent, a boy, and gay.Hmmmm...maybe it's time to have an abortion...The resolution is powerful and moving...and you may not like the end if you saw the cable movie. This is superb theatre reading.
a rare gem

What would you do if you knew that your child, no matter how loved or how many opportunities you provided it, was destined to live a life of persecution and discrimination simply because of fate? The Twilight of the Golds is a rare gem of a play that deals with a controversial topic matter that unfolds in powerful situations with stunning results. This is not a play for those of conservative or naive points of view. It deals with the fight of gays to be accepted by not only the public but their own families, the difficulty of considering abortion, and the dangers of the knowledge discovered by genetic research. In performance, this play is astounding and a true gift to those who are able to witness it. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend repeated readings of this complex script.
