This book is (mostly) a feast for the eyes, and was my introduction to Kay Nielsen as an artist! Unfortunately there is a racist caricature in one of the stories, The Twelve Dancing Princesses. This is in terrible taste and marred one of the most beautiful panels in the book.
The stories are all classic folk/fairy tales, retold in Arthur Quiller-Couch’s very 1920’s “nice gams, toots” voice. The fables all have nice, standard moral messages for young kids, but I’d definitely take care to turn the caricature into a teachable moment.
