Charlie Deegan has gone from an Army sharpshooter to a drunken brawler, to a prisoner in Yuma Territorial Prison. He escapes and heads north to change his ways and become a cowboy. In a cave he finds a dead miner's cache of supplies and gold, giving him his needs for the trek. On the way he fights Indians and Mexican banditos, tangles with a crooked sheriff and is locked in a military stockade for a saloon brawl when he is recognized as a prison escapee. He breaks out and vows never to drink again. He befriends a cowboy who offers him a job on a cattle drive. He meets the cowboys, whites, blacks, Mexicans and an Indian. One of them, an ex-Prussian army officer, feels Charlie has insulted him, by not drinking with him and insists on fighting. Charlie is told that if he fights, he will be fired. Will Charlie fight the Prussian? Will he drink again? Will Charlie become a cowboy?
