This slim volume distills the pure essence of Mertonian reflections upon religion and solitude, providing gentle suggestions regarding approach to a more spiritual life. "The True Solitude" presents the great summation of Merton's writings in concentrated form which may lead the seeker to further investigation of his writings. If you're not Catholic, reading Merton's voluminous other works to discover his spiritual thinking and insights is much like reading "Lady Chatterly's Lover" for gamekeeping insights: there's so much extraneous material one has to wade through. The subject work suggests ways in which the seeker can FIND for himself, as opposed to merely witnessesing the spiritual advancement of Merton; it provides, not a fish, but suggestions on how to fish. "The True Solitude" should be reprinted without delay.
