The Trouble With Pretty Things: A Dutch Curridge Mystery
A funeral wreath arrives for a woman who is still alive. By morning, she's dead.
When Lenora Valloway-a respected dress shop owner with a reputation for poise and discretion-receives funeral flowers at her store, Fort Worth treats it as scandal by lunchtime. By the next morning, it's murder.
Dutch Curridge knows better than to trust what a town decides too quickly. What begins as a cruel gesture turns into something darker as he follows the trail through shopgirls, florists, old grudges, and the kind of buried history polite people prefer to call finished. The deeper he digs, the clearer it becomes that Lenora's death was not sudden at all. It was coming for a long time.
As rumor spreads and the city starts improving the truth into something easier to swallow, Dutch has to sort performance from grief, gossip from warning, and memory from motive. Because the wreath was not a joke. It was a message. And whoever sent it may not be finished yet.
Atmospheric, sharp, and richly steeped in mid-century Texas, THE TROUBLE WITH PRETTY THINGS is a haunting Dutch Curridge mystery about elegance, malice, and the danger of what refuses to stay buried.
